The Pobjoy Mint released the 2017 Crabeater Seal Titanium Coin, struck under the authority of the British Antarctic Territory. This is the latest release under Pobjoy Mint’s popular Animal Series. An Uncirculated Cupro Nickel version also released along with the Titanium coins. The Crabeater seal or Lobodon carcinophaga is found on the coast of Antarctica and is a mammal that despite its name does not feed on crabs! The Crabeater pups are big babies and at birth, they measure about 120cm in length and weigh up to 30kg.
The obverse of this new coin features a mother seal and her pup resting on the pack ice while the father leaves to hunt and the coin face value “TWO POUNDS”. On the reverse, the design is rich with an exclusive Pobjoy effigy design of HM Queen Elizabeth II, engraved the Issuing Authority “British Antarctic Territory “ and the year 2017. This coin having a limited mintage of 7,500 Blue Titanium coins and the 10,000 Uncirculated Cupro Nickel coins worldwide. The 36.1mm diameter Titanium coin struck of 990 Blue Titanium and Weighs 10 grams. The Cupro Nickel coin is shipped in a unique Pobjoy Mint blue presentation pouch. The Titanium coin is shipped encapsulated in an acrylic capsule for protection and housed in a stunning red box with a Certificate of Authenticity.
