2021 Canada -The First 100 Years of Confederation

The Royal Canadian Mint released the first coin of the “The First 100 Years of Confederation” series. The First 100 Years of Confederation is a 3 coin series from The Royal Canadian Mint featuring the story of Canada, and how they managed to bridge distances and come together as a nation; first by rail, second by sea, and then by air. Each coin features the transportation methods used to build and unite Canada.

The first coin of the 3-coin series is “An Emerging Country” featuring the Railroad, the second coin is “Coming of Age” and the final one is “Canada Takes Wing “. The coin features the 4-4-0 locomotive which was in service in Canada’s early days.

The reverse of this 99.9 pure silver coin designed by the Canadian artist Glen Green, features Engine No. 374, the 4-4-0 locomotive that was used as the first passenger train along the transcontinental railway which linked eastern and western Canada. The obverse shows the effigies of five monarchs that have appeared on Canadian coins since 1867; the first effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, with the Latin inscription “ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA”; the effigy of King George VI by T. H. Paget, with the inscription “GEORGIVS VI D·G·REX”; the effigy of King George V by Sir E. B. Mackennal, with the inscription “GEORGIVS V D·G·REX ET IND: IMP:”; the effigy of King Edward VII by G. W. De Saulles, with the inscription “EDWARDVS VII D·G·REX IMP:”; and the effigy of Queen Victoria by L. C. Wyon, with the inscription “VICTORIA D·G·REGINA”.

The Obverse inscription stands for;

  • G. – Dei Gratia, “By the Grace of God”
  • REGINA– “Queen”
  • REX– “King”
  • IMP– “Emperor”
  • IMP:IND– “Emperor of India”

Each coin in this series has a face value of $50. This 2021proof finish coin minted with 999.99 pure silver, weighs 157.6 grams and has a diameter of 65.25mm. The coin has an ultra-low mintage of 1250 coins worldwide. Each coin is individually encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded clamshell with a black beauty box and shipped with serialized Certificate of Authority
