The Royal Australian Mint released the first batch of the “donation dollars” on 5 September 2020 on the United Nations “International Day of Charity”. The mint will release 25 million of the donation coins over the next few years, that is about one coin for every Australian.
The world first ‘Donation Dollar” is a reminder to encourage Australians to give smaller amounts more often and across more charities as Australia has about 57,000 charities and not-for-profit organizations need more public support despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2020 “Donation Coin” is the first Australian colored coin other than golden. The obverse of the coin has a green center with a gold ripple design, with the writings “DONATION DOLLAR” and “GIVE HELP TO OTHERS”. The coin designed in such a way that the more the coin is donated, the more the green wears to reveal a series of golden ripples. The reverse of the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
