2019 Dutch aviation – “the plane is flying”
The Royal Dutch Mint’s first official commemorative coin of 2019 has been commissioned by the Ministry of Finance in honor of 100 years of Dutch aviation – “the plane is flying”! With the face value of 5 and 10 euros, three coins are being issued: gold proof, silver proof, and silver-plated. KLM (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij or Royal Airline Company), the world’s oldest airline, was founded on October 7, 1919 by eight Dutch businessmen.
The first flight of KLM was from London to Amsterdam on May 17, 1920 and the first intercontinental flight was on October 1, 1924 from Amsterdam to Jakarta. As per the statistics of 2017, KLM has a fleet of 204 aircrafts, 34,872 employees and transported 32.7 million passengers. Now KLM is part of the Air France-KLM group.
The coin designed by the Dutch artist Marijke van Warmerdam and if the three coins are placed next to each other in the order of Silver, the middle in BU and then Gold , you can see that the position of the aircraft and its shadow is shifting; the plane is flying! The coin release will take place on March 14, 2019, and the coins will be available in the coming weeks. The mintage of the coins is limited and available in in silver proof, gold proof, brilliant uncirculated quality in a numbered coin card and in a special Prestige set.
The €10, .900 fine gold proof coin weighing 6.72 grams, 22.5 mm in diameter and the mintage limited to 1,000 pieces. The sterling silver, .925 fine proof coin weighing 15.5 grams, 33 mm in diameter, and mintage limited to 4,500 coins. The €5 silver-plated copper coin measures 29 mm, weighs 10.5 grams and the mintage is 15,000. The four-piece deluxe Prestige set with one of each of the three coins and a one-ounce silver medal.
